ABOUT US

Trion® Industries was started in 1965 as a partnership by three friends after David Thalenfeld developed an idea that solved a common retail merchandising issue – How to make display hooks easier to move and replanogram without the interfering uptilt.

David “Bud” Thalenfeld owned a chain of five-and-dime stores — stores much like the Woolworth Stores of the day. He was therefore familiar with the problems of inventory stocking and displays in the retail environment. He conceived the idea for a pegboard hook which didn’t have to be tilted up to put it in or remove it from the pegboard — the first straight-entry hook. This was the original Spacemaker 100/200 series hook. The design was patented by the partnership and two suppliers were found to produce the wire and steel parts. Because it now was much easier to move hooks filled with merchandise, and therefore easier to change displays, Woolworth’s started to buy the hooks and the new business became successful.

The company originally began in Brooklyn. After one and one-half years, one of the original partners left, putting Mr. Thalenfeld and Mr. Rubin in joint control. During this period, the hooks were manufactured by Custom Metal Products of Ridgefield, NJ, along with a second firm. Trion designed the products, contracted for their manufacture, warehoused, and sold them.

In 1970, Custom Metal Products was commissioned to implement another new design by Mr. Thalenfeld. They were to make a machine to produce a unique new hook with a flat metal back and a ball end. The hook became a standard in the industry and the machine design which produced it was adapted by the wire forming industry for use throughout the world. Trion continues to produce hooks of this design today, offering them in the 90, 700 and 800 series lines.

In 1978, Trion introduced the first Scanning Hook, resulting in another revolution in the marketing of products, and the tracking of inventory, sales and consumer purchasing patterns. Scanning Hooks are now commonplace in every retail environment.

Trion grew and moved several times; first to a 5,000 square foot building in Great Neck, NY in 1970, then to a 17,000 square foot building in Garden City, NY in 1977. In 1975, John Thalenfeld, David’s son, joined the company, taking a position in the warehouse and doing shipping. In 1982, the firm moved to its present location in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

As the business grew, it became necessary for Trion to manufacture its own hooks in order to be competitive and meet its commitments to customers and their ever-increasing order volumes. Custom Metal Products, the trusted and long-standing original supplier, was acquired and moved to the Wilkes-Barre location in June, 1982. Trion had purchased a building of 50,000 square feet, the business continued to grow, more patents were obtained, and additional items were added to the line, as well as additional machinery for manufacture.

In 1986, The Thalenfelds bought out Mr. Rubin’s interest in the company. John Thalenfeld became President, and David Thalenfeld became Chairman. Continuing growth required expansion of the building, and the addition of 50,000 square feet around the perimeter of the existing building was completed in November, 1988.

Over the years, a new warehouse was built connecting the original Trion building complex with the converted 75,000 square foot Building to the west. A Product Showroom, Assembly Department, Packing Department, powder coat finishing line, along with select administrative offices, are located in this expansion. Another 200,000 square building to the east, was acquired and contains finished product warehouse space and the Shipping Department. Finally a 32,000 square foot addition to the main plant subassembly warehouse was completed in 1999. Today the Trion headquarters and plant complex totals close to 500,000 square feet.

Throughout the 2000s, current president, Adam Thalenfeld, grandson of the founder, learned many aspects of the business by holding various positions throughout the company that included powder coating, welding, assembly and sales.

One key to Trion’s growth has been its ongoing investment of profits in new equipment and automation. The multi-slide wire forming OMCG machines, and automated welding, enables Trion to operate at maximum efficiency and be the low-cost, leading producer in the industry. Eleven new sophisticated co-extrusion lines extend Trion’s capability in the plastics field. In 2006, a completely new powder coating system was installed boosting production and increasing environmental protections..

This new equipment; in combination with an exceptional workforce; loyal, long-term experienced employees; and a dedicated supervisory staff are responsible for Trion’s ongoing success. The innovation and creativity of the Trion team and the engineering staff have resulted in more than 120 patents, and additional product growth for the company.

David passed away in May of 2009. Following John’s passing in February of 2024, his children, Adam and Rebecca Thalenfeld, became the 3rd generation of Thalenfeld family ownership. Committed to the family legacy of inventiveness and business acumen his grandfather started, Adam now serves as the company president.

DAVID R. THALENFELD

Founder, 1919-2009

David R. Thalenfeld, known as “Bud” to family and friends, was a hardworking businessman, devoted family man, and the founder and inspirational leader of Trion Industries. His early business career included running a chain of 5 & dime stores in the New York City region, where he developed his concepts that led to the foundation of Trion Industries in 1965. Formed with two other partners, David eventually bought them out and relocated to Wilkes-Barre PA, where he taught his son John the family business. David was a board member and treasurer of POPAI (Point of Purchase Advertising International) and a founding member of WiFAB (The Wire Fabricators Manufacturers Association), which evolved into the present day PDMF Permanent Display Manufacturers Forum. He was inducted into the POPAI Hall of Fame and held over 88 patents for display innovations.

David served in the U.S. Army Air Corps 11th Bomb Squadron in China during the Second World War, then he attended classes at New School University. His favorite story (and something that is hung up around the Trion offices and factory) is at a business conference, when asked what he wanted to do, his immediate answer was, “I want to have the best factory in the world making what we make and I want to have a lot of fun creating it.”

JOHN S. THALENFELD

President & CEO, 1984-2024

Born in Queens, New York, in 1956, John Thalenfeld has worked his way up the ranks at Trion Industries, first in 1972 as a packer, to the current President and CEO. Being the son of David Thalenfeld, John learned first hand experience working in the family’s 5 & dime store as a child, and later working directly under his father at newly formed Trion.

After attending New York University and Wilkes College, John was a moving force behind relocating the factory to Wilkes Barre PA, and has advanced an environmental stewardship and community and employee engagement agenda unique to Trion.

John passed away unexpectedly in February 2024. All who knew him, his corporate endeavors, and years of involvement in community charitable efforts mourn this unfathomable loss. The corporation’s officers, management, and employees pledge to carry on with all of John’s undertakings in his absence. John would want us to continue serving our customers and our community to the best of our abilities.
